History:
Merrit Kincaid was born on the shores of the Great Lakes in Detroit, Michigan. There, he attended primary and secondary schools, having un unremarkable childhood, as it were. It was not until he applied to and was accepted into Starfleet Academy in 2359, that his real adventure began. In his fourth year at the Academy, Kincaid and five other cadets were assigned to a routine training mission in long range Astro-Navigation. Accompanying them was their instructor, Commander Jerrod Vox, a joined Trill.
They set course for the Gagarin system in an Academy Runabout, arriving at the threshold of their destination and dropping out of warp. As they prepared to turn about and set course for Vulcan, an explosion in the Deuterium tanks set their warp core on an implosion imminent breach cycle. One that, no matter what they tried, could not be shut down. As another explosion rocked the small craft and breached the hull, Kincaid's class mates were sucked out into the void. Only Jerrod Vox's iron grip on his forearm saved Kincaid, but Vox had been gravely injured in the second explosion and time was running out for them both.
Merrit quickly set the transporter for nearby Gagarin IV, which the sensors read as an M-Class planet and beamed them out as their core exploded. Unknown to either Vox or Kincaid, Gagarin IV was home to the Darwin Science and Research Station, a clandestine Starfleet think tank, with research spanning the knowledge of Human and Alien alike.
Kincaid was quickly tended to and stabilized, but Vox was dying. With stasis an unviable option as the symbiote continued to degrade, no viable Trill hosts on the station and the chance of one reaching Gagarin IV before it expired being unlikely, Kincaid made the decision to have the Vox symbiote implanted into himself as a stop gap measure until it could be transplanted to a Trill host. That was the plan. Unfortunately, it was not what happened.
The scientists did, in fact, implant the Trill symbiote in to Kincaid, but they went farther than they had informed either Kincaid or Vox. While under sedation, one of the scientists resequenced Kincaid's DNA so that his body would not reject the Vox symbiote. In other words, they were stuck with each other, as removing Vox would kill Kincaid. Weeks later, after Kincaid and Jerrod Vox's body were retrieved by Starfleet, Darwin Station was shut down and the scientists assigned there disappeared.
Merrit spent the next two years at Starfleet Medical, being studied and certified for duty. It was a unique arrangement for both he and Vox. He refused to adopt the Trill name of Vox and though they were thoroughly melded together as one being, there were several strange side effects: He and Vox could communicate with each other directly via telepathic means. This meant that while Merrit could often be seen talking to himself, it was not an imaginary person with whom he spoke. The other side effect noted was that, if Kincaid allowed it, Vox could assume total control of his body for a short while.
Starfleet Psychiatrists did, however, pronounce him of sound mind and Kincaid was allowed to resume his career in Starfleet. With the knowledge of eight lifetimes inside his head, Kincaid excelled in every posting he had until he finally achieved the posting of Chief of Operations aboard the USS Bateson which patrolled the Badlands in the Bajor Sector.
