Past History
2335-2339: Pre-Roseland era:
When Thomas Joseph Winter was born to, Siobhan and Reginald Winter in 2335, they couldn’t have been more excited. The two Science Officers had been trying for the better part of two years to conceive a child and they had almost given up all hope for a child. For the first year of the boy’s life Thomas’s parents were both granted a break from their duties on the basis that they used the down time they had available to review cadet reports with regards to their specialities.
When Thomas was one, his parents began to focus more on their careers again. Thomas had almost been pushed into the background, the excitement for their son being lost amongst the algorithms. For the first for years of his life they stayed in Anglezarke, working at the Science branch of the English Starfleet Command annex. To say Thomas was lonely was an understatement. Due to the nature of his home there were no children of a similar age so Thomas had taken to spending a lot of his time playing with holographic people.
When Thomas was four his parents decided that they wanted to take a different avenue with regards to their careers. They both signed up for commission aboard the USS Lloyd, a Galaxy Class cruiser which had just been cleared for a five year exploratory mission. Thomas was, considering his circumstances, practically un-phased by the move. The only issue that he had was the lack of time he would get with his photonic playmates.
During the his time on the Lloyd, Thomas had become significantly close with the Lloyds Chief Tactical Officer, Lieutenant Elisia Roseland, due to her down time running parallel with the child’s waking hours. He took a fascination with everything the Chief Tactical Officer did. This relationship would be the one that would define the choices the Commander would make as he grew and developed.
During the fifth month of the Lloyds mission tragedy struck, Thomas’s parents died. They had flew a shuttle into the atmosphere of a Class T Gas Giant when the shuttles systems malfunction. Unfortunately they were trying to manoeuvre through an unusually volatile electromagnetic storm. They ultimately plummeted into core of the planet when the impulse engines malfunctioned, propelling them at maximum impulse into their doom.
2339-2353: Becoming a Roseland:
After the accident the distraught child spent the two week journey back to Earth attempting to convince the ships Chief of Operations to build him holographic representations of his parents. He had become erratic in terms of his behaviour, going from bubbly, too distraught in minutes. The ships counsellor decided to relieve Lt Roseland from duty. He believed that she would be the only person who the boy would learn to cope with.
As the counsellor had predicted Elisia had a brilliant effect on the boy. By the time they were a day away from Earth the boy had gone back to harassing Elisia to tell him about any and all things related to her role on the ship, albeit with a meeker attitude than usual. When they returned to Earth Elisia was shocked to find out that the boy she’d come to care for had nowhere to go. He had no relatives within a reasonable distance, and the ones that where didn’t want him. It was nearly decided that the boy stay in the care of the Federation until a suitable foster family could be found.
Elisia, after speaking with her husband, petitioned for her to take charge of the child so long as Thomas wanted her to do so. Not so shockingly, Thomas enthusiastically agreed and it was settled. Thomas was to become a Roseland. Life with the Roseland felt like the life Thomas had always needed. Elisia and her husband Brandon doted on the newest addition of their family. Elisia nurtured his insatiable knowledge, whereas her husband made to effort to make sure Thomas experienced everything a boy should. Two years after Thomas had moved in it was on one of these father-son events that Thomas spoke to Brandon about why he was wasn’t a Roseland. The boy was confused. By this point Thomas had taken to calling Elisia ‘Mamma’ and Brandon ‘Papa’, and in return they had taken to introducing him as their son. Always making sure those who thought their situation was weird where politely offered clarification.
Brandon and Elisia agreed with Thomas on the matter and filed the required papers for him to become a Roseland in every sense but the ones that didn’t count. Life after this went from brilliant to amazing for the family. Elisia decided to resign her commission with Starfleet to help her son with his education and just to ensure that he had a parent around him at all times.
When Thomas was 15 his father decided it was time for him to return to off planet work. Brandon was a Strategic Operations Officer at the rank of Commander, and had been offered a role at Earth Spacedock, a position that many officers held with high regard. As a result of his father leaving Thomas initially became withdrawn. He and Brandon had a bond that rivalled even Thomas’ and Elisias, and it hurt him for it to be tethered.
After a few months he began to calm down, under guidance of his mother, who pointed out that he was a shuttle ride away and there was no reason to be acting the way he was. He understood her point and began to focus back on his education, a feat that was fuelled by his determination to become a Securty/Tactical Officer with Starfleet.
2353-2357: Starfleet Academy
When Thomas was 18 he applied for Starfleet Academy. He’d done well at school, coming out at the top of his class in many of his subjects. The boy had made his parents proud, not that they had expected any less. Starfleet Academy accepted him. He would later recall that this was the best day of his life, next to becoming a Roseland.
As is with many students, Thomas had a very uneventful time at the Academy. The only thing that made his time there different from others was that he bunked up with William Riker, the man who would become the Executive Officer of one of the most influential Federation Vessels of their time. Thomas and William never really had a friendship however; they do still keep in contact. Thomas graduated amongst the Top of his class and was more than enthused to show his mum the pip they’d both prepared for him to wear for most of his life.
2357-2360: Security Officer, Earth Spacedock
After the academy Thomas, under the advice of his father, took up commission aboard Earth Spacedock. He found his experience there to be valuable. Whilst there was relatively no way for him to express the tactical training he'd received. He did however receive invaluable knowledge about many of the different species that called federation space their own. He was also lucky enough to meet many federation captains who where more than enthused to share their stories with the eager young man.
2360-2365: Security Officer, USS Lloyd (Galaxy Class), Achieved the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade:
After three years with the station Thomas decided he needed to spread his wings and take himself further away from his parents. Finding that having his father as a direct superior was a very restrictive situation and it had began to cause a strain on their relationship. Thomas adjusted to life on a galaxy class vessel relatively easy and was pleased to find that it was the same captain as when he was a child. This was part of the reason behind the captain accepting him.
There where many occasions aboard that vessels that allowed Thomas to excel and this ultimately lead to him rising to the position of Chief Security for the final year aboard the vessel. He also gained the rank of Lieutenant as a thank you for his service aboard the vessel
2365-2367: Transferred to tactical exclusively, Chief Tactical Officer, USS Bradbury, (Sovereign Class):
When Thomas received the rank of Lieutenant he was shocked to discover that he'd received a personal request to join the USS Bradbury on a two year assignment to the Romulan-Federation neutral zone on patrol assignment. This was the point in Thomas became exclusively Tactical in career terms.
2367-2371: Achieved Rank of Lieutenant Commander. Command School and lecturer, Starfleet Academy:
At the end of his mission Thomas had decided to take a break from all the fight and headed back to Earth. Upon his arrival the Commander met with Command to discuss possible roles he could play in the academy. It was agreed, under advisement from Admiral Satie that Thomas would take the mantle of lecturer on the Advanced Tactical Course. It was also agreed that he would be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and that he would attend Command School. The Admirals believed it was a course he would benefit from.
2371- : Achieved the rank of Commander,Executive Officer, Unity Station:
Upon graduation Thomas received the rank of Commander and with it the offer to choose a new assignment. He had set his sights on an excelsior class vessel as the ships executive officer. However, when news of Unity Station got to his father, his father had other ideas.
Thomas’s father had literally pushed the application form down his sons face when the proposals for the station where brought to him. His father initially being the officer offered the position of Executive Officer. Thomas’ father had different ideas. He’d heard the command staff for the station would be relatively young, and that they’d benefit from having a younger XO, as opposed to him.
After two months Thomas relented. What he’d never admit to his father was that secretly he wanted the assignment that his dad had sold it to him a long time ago. When he received his orders, he made his way to the station. The year 2371 marked the beginning of what would possibly be the most challenging, yet extensively rewarding missions that the Officer had partaken in.
