Bridge, USS Helsinki
It was a quiet day on the bridge of the USS Helsinki. En route to Rigel VII for a routine mission, the only sounds were the occasional beeps and chirps coming from various consoles. “Captain, I’m receiving a hail from Starfleet command,” said Lieutenant Zhang, interrupting the peaceful routine on the bridge.
“Thank you, I’ll take it in my office,” replied Captain Alenis Meru. The dark-haired Bajoran woman stood up, adjusted her uniform, and sauntered towards her office, her cup of Pyrellian ginger tea in her left hand. “Zhang, you have the bridge,” she said over her shoulder as the doors whooshed open.
Alenis sat down in her office in front of a screen. She took a sip of her tea and a deep breath before answering the hail. The replicated tea wasn’t half as good as the real thing, but it was almost impossible to find real Pyrellian ginger tea outside of Bajoran space.
Alenis didn’t particularly enjoy talking to flag officers, especially not out of the blue like this. When the screen activated, she saw Admiral Ross in his office at Starfleet command. She was surprised to see that he was flanked by her former commanding officer, Captain – now Commodore – Rixx. “Admiral Ross, Commodore Rixx,” she nodded. “Congratulations on your promotion, Commodore. To what do I owe the pleasure?” she said, trying to be as diplomatic as possible.
“Well, I’m going to be blunt,” replied the Admiral. “You’re being reassigned to—“
“Reassigned?” interrupted Alenis, forcefully. She scowled slightly and stared the Admiral right in the eyes. “Sir, I was just assigned to the Helsinki six months ago. This is highly unusual to—“
“I understand, let me finish,” replied Ross, reasserting himself. He was clearly surprised at being interrupted by a junior officer so soon in the conversation. “We have a very important assignment for you. You are to command Starbase Unity, in the Pelek system.”
“Pelek? That’s in Bajoran space,” replied Alenis, inquisitively.
“Correct. Starbase Unity is part of a joint Federation-Bajoran project to rehabilitate and recolonize Pelek IV, after the environmental destruction and depopulation during the Cardassian occupation.”
“I’m well aware of the history of Pelek IV.” Alenis’ stern tone betrayed the fact that she was annoyed at being reassigned so soon into her first command. “But sir, if I may speak freely, if you’re giving me this assignment because you need a token Bajoran to smooth things over with the locals, you can go tell Starfleet Command to—“
“I recommended you for this mission,” interrupted Rixx. “Look, Alenis, I don’t need to tell you how important this assignment is. There are a lot of delicate political and diplomatic issues floating around, and there have been threats from the Maquis and the Cardassians. And the Dominion; I don’t need to remind you of what happened at New Bajor. We need someone who will be assertive in defending Federation interests in the region. I nominated you for this assignment because you are the most assertive and professional officer I’ve had the privilege of serving with.”
“All right,” sighed Alenis. “When do I start?”
“Two weeks,” replied Ross. “Construction is nearing completion on the starbase; we’ll relieve you and arrange transport at Rigel VII. Ross out.”
The image of Ross and Rixx on Alenis’ screen was replaced by that of the logo of Starfleet command, signifying that the transmission was over. Alenis sighed. Great, just as I was getting comfortable, she thought. She would have to inform her senior staff of the transfer at the senior staff meeting the next day. Finishing her tea, she pondered the assignment. You know, this might not be so bad. At least I might be able to get a decent cup of tea.

Admiral Ross deactivated his screen and turned to face Rixx. “Is she always like that?” he asked.
“Since I’ve known her.”
